Sweet potatoes are not toxic to cats, and are actually fairly healthy for them. Many cat food brands actually include sweet potatoes in their ingredients. This is because they have a high fiber content, and are easily digested by cats.
If you decide to give your cat some sweet potato straight, you should not give it more than a table spoon at a time. Also make sure that the potato is not flavored with any spices. (As some spices, especially garlic, and onion, are very poisonous to cats.) If the sweet potato was cooked with these, do not feed them to your cat.
You also should not give your cat sweet potatoes too often. if you do, it can result in your cat starting to have loose bowl movements.
