Can Guinea Pigs Eat Bananas?

Can Guinea Pigs Eat Bananas If you are thinking about giving your guinea pig bananas, you should think again.

Although small amounts (a pinch) of banana once a week wont harm your guinea pig, giving them too much can make you guinea pig very sick, or even die.

Bananas are not toxic, but they cause guinea pigs to have gas. Because of how guinea pigs are, it is very difficult for them to pass gas, and it builds up inside of them. If too much gas builds up, your guinea pig could die.

Guinea pigs really love the taste of banana, so you need to be very careful not to let them get at bananas. A guinea pig wont know that they are bad, and could easily eat a lot of the banana. If this happens, you should take your guinea pig to the vet, who may be able to help your guinea pig pass the gas that builds up.

Some places will tell you that it is ok for guinea pigs to eat a couple slices of banana, however that is really pushing it, and is NOT recommended.

The video below shows two guinea pigs eating half of a banana. You really should not give them that much at a time, because it can be very dangerous.

Be a responsible guinea pig owner, and spread the word!
