Can Cats Sense Pregnancy?

PregnancyFind Out Once and for All

Can cats sense pregnancy? This is a belief that has been around for a very long time now. Internet forums and message boards are filled with people asking if cats have the power to detect pregnancy. Now, it’s time to settle once and for all if they can really do it.

Animal Behaviorists Seem to Think so

A lot of animal behaviorists and trainers are saying that yes, cats can sense a pregnancy. While they admit that there are no scientific studies to back this up, they’re saying that they’ve seen a lot of cases wherein cats (among other pets) changed their behaviors around the same time when their owners got pregnant.

What Do they Normally Do?

If you’re pregnant, you may start to notice that your cat is noticing you more than the usual. Your cat may follow you more than the usual as well. In addition, your cat will cuddle with you every chance he or she gets. Of course, the spot near your belly suddenly becomes a favorite spot.

What are they Sensing?

Can cats sense pregnancy? While they can’t really sense the fact that you’re pregnant, they can sense signs and symptoms. For example, they can sense changes to the following:

  • Your behavior
  • Your mood (mood swings?)
  • Your posture and how you move
  • The chemistry in your body

It’s Also Your Body Heat

Your body temperature is higher when you’re pregnant, and your cat senses this. This is why your cat would cuddle more than the usual. Of course, the area around your belly is warmer and this is why your cat seems to favor that spot near your belly and sticks to you like glue.

The Effects on them Differ

Dogs are known to be very protective of their pregnant owner. They would even growl at your significant other. Cats sometimes become more protective as well, although it’s not as common as in dogs. As an example, cats are known to stand by their puking owners.

Can cats sense pregnancy? Their sudden fits of jealousy can show it. They’re used to being the only “baby” in the house and they can become jealous if they feel that a baby is on the way.

Conclusion

So can cats sense pregnancy? There are countless of cases that prove that they can. While there are no scientific studies that can back it up, feel free to enjoy the additional attention given to you by your cat now that you’re pregnant.
